Employee engagement is key to success for every company. Engaged organizations have double the rate of success compared to less engaged organizations according to Harvard Business Review. Employees who are truly engaged in their work are more likely to invest in the work they do which leads to a higher quality of work produced and a higher productivity. They are more eager to take on (new) challenges, to collaborate with colleagues, to help clients, to remain committed to their employer and are less likely to call in sick. Research indicates that when employees are motivated to do their job, they are 30% more productive, three times as much creative, 40% more efficient and easily generate up to 37% more sales. By investing in employee engagement, a team manager can boost the productivity and the quality of work of his team members, and is more capable of retaining top talent. Talent Culture found that increasing employee engagement investments by 10% can increase profits by $2,400 per employee per year.
So, what motivates your employees, teams and business units, and how do you keep them motivated?
Intrinsic motivation emerges from our inner drive. Each and every one of us perceives the world around us and the situation we are in based on our personal needs, and everyone is driven by the desire to fulfill these needs. The 2 or 3 motivational drivers that are dominant, motivate us the most and govern much of our behaviour on the work floor. A good understanding of our motivational drivers is the first step in improving our emotional intelligence. It increases our awareness of the mental needs and longings that drive our emotions, motivations and behaviour, and helps to control them. But more importantly, it enables us to create and maintain a situation at work that fulfils our inner drive. For example; if an business unit is longing for independence (autonomy) and a situation is about to occur that will limit its ability to make its own choices and to organize its own tasks, it is very likely that this situation will demotivate this business unit and will lead to a reduced overall performance. By having a good understanding of their inner drive an organization is able to make accurate predictions with regards to how its employees, teams and business units will respond to change. And by fulfilling this inner drive (emotional needs), an organization is able to increase the motivation of its employees, teams and business units to display the desired behaviour and to perform at their very best.
“It is all about purpose and meaning: If an organization and its employees, teams and business units share the same ambition and values, they will work extra hard to achieve them.”
